A Lasting Legacy

In 1962, with a dream and a Double Bourbon Manhattan, Gisèle Masson sent a wire to her husband, Charles: “Congratulations! You are the owner of 3 East 52nd Street! Find a name!” On December 19th,1962, during a blizzard and newspaper strike, La Grenouille was born. From that day on, a loving following began with an array of stars bringing their glamour to La Grenouille. Who could forget the eyes of Sir Laurence Olivier, Paul Newman and Edward G. Robinson; the voices of Richard Burton, John Wayne, Frank Sinatra, Placido Domingo and Sean Connery; the superb and legendary Elizabeth Taylor and Sophia Loren; the incomparable Mick Jagger, David Bowie, Rod Stewart, Prince, Madonna, Elton John and Iman, the comedic genius of Alan King, Woody Allen, Johnny Carson, the superb and elegant Galanos, Yves Saint Laurent, Christian Lacroix and Ungaro, the extravagant Salvador Dali and famed French painter Bernard Lamotte who lived on the 2nd floor above La Grenouille entertaining Greta Garbo, Charlie Chaplin and Antoine de St Exupery who wrote parts of the little prince in the upstairs room of La Grenouille.

For 55 years and counting, La Grenouille lives on, with its exuberant and magical floral displays and centerpieces created by Philippe Masson, who maintains the quality of the timeless and classic dishes created by his father, Chef Extraordinaire Charles Masson. Like his father, Philippe learned at a very young age the fine dining techniques and increased his culinary skills at Le Notre, Fauchon, and The Plaza Athenee.

The tradition continues, honoring his father Charles and Mother Gisèle, who is La Grenouille. The family is proof that love and dedication are the ultimate ingredients to achieving what La Grenouille is all about:
